This month, South Texas College celebrates Women’s History Month. It is marking 100 years since women nationwide were able to achieve the right to vote after years of effort. 

A lecture by Sarah Bell takes place March 9 in the Pecan Campus Library Rainbow Room as part of the celebration. Bell give a talk to commemorate the centennial of the women’s suffrage amendment being adopted nationwide.

Bell serves as the Kansas state coordinator of the Votes for Women Trail. Her research focuses on the history of women’s involvement in political and social movements around the turn of the 20th century. An accomplished speaker, she has consulted on the production of a women’s suffrage exhibit at the Kansas Historical Museum. Her honors include a spot walking behind the Centennial of Suffrage float at the 2020 Rose Parade.

“We should all remember how much of a struggle it was to gain the vote for women and to secure the vote of other disenfranchised groups over the course of our nation’s history,” said event coordinator Jaclyn J.S. Miller, assistant professor of history at South Texas College.

There will be a live-stream of the talk in the Mid Valley’s Student Services Building Multipurpose Room (F154). The talk takes place from 1-2:15 p.m.

A voters’ rights representative will be available at the Pecan location to help students register for the fall election. The South Texas Faculty Association will also serve refreshments to guests at both locations.
