Mia Cano, a junior of the Lamar Academy/IB Programme in McAllen, has been selected to travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center this summer to participate in the High School Aerospace Scholars program.

Cano is one of 270 high school juniors from across Texas to be part of this unique NASA program. The selection of students comes after individual nominations from state legislators.

During the school year, select students completed a 16-week interactive, online curriculum. This includes four distance-learning modules each containing four web-based assignments. The onsite experience at NASA will include working in teams, briefings and interaction with NASA experts. Students will also tour JSC facilities and apply their knowledge as a team to both plan and design a mission to Mars.

Onsite experience will conclude with a presentation of a proposal. Attending will be members of the Texas Legislature, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and Rotary National Award for Space Achievement. JSC senior management will also attend.

About HAS

HAS began in 1999 with the state of Texas in partnership with JSC and the Texas educational community. The program encourages more students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The impact of the 20-year program reaches more than 10,000 students from across Texas.

With this program, NASA continues the Agency’s tradition of investing in the nation’s educational programs. It directly ties to the agency’s education goal of attracting and retaining students in STEM disciplines critical to NASA’s future missions, which includes their mission to MARS.
