The Salvation Army of Harlingen recently welcomed new leaders, captains Benjamin and Wendy Deuel.

Salvation Army officers periodically transfer to different locations, typically every three to five years. The Deuels are enthusiastic and dynamic leaders, and come to Harlingen from Florence, Ala. Here, they were responsible for the programs and services of the Florence Salvation Army.

Benjamin and Wendy Deuel met at The Salvation Army seminary in Atlanta, Ga. in 2003 and married in May 2004. Benjamin is a native of Hattiesburg, Miss. and Wendy of Puebla, Mexico. They, along with their four children Isaac (15), Josiah (11), Jonathan (10) and Selah (7), have a passion for helping those in need.

“It has been exciting to meet the people of Harlingen and discover the many opportunities for ministry here,” said Wendy Deuel. “We look forward to meeting the needs of this community and ‘Doing The Most Good’ alongside the staff, volunteers and supporters of The Salvation Army.”

The couple is responsible for all the church’s programs and social services. This includes the weekly Sunday morning Sunday School. There are also a Women’s Ministry program every Wednesday. The social services department includes financial assistance for utilities and housing, food and clothing assistance, and more. The church also has Family Thrift store in Harlingen. Proceeds from the store provide funding for the many financial assistance programs offered to the community.
