SUMMARY:7th Annual South Texas Adolescent Health Summit
DESCRIPTION:The seventh annual South Texas Adolescent Health Summit on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 targets highly focused professionals from the Rio Grande Valley\, including social workers\, clinicians\, counselors\, researchers\, practitioners\, educators and youth service professionals who serve young people in this region of Texas. \nThis continuing education opportunity allows participants to receive valuable continuing education and have the opportunity to gain and refine skills while networking with colleagues. \nThe goal of the South Texas Summit is to increase knowledge\, skills and abilities among adults who provide services and support to adolescents on the Texas – Mexico Border about adolescent development\, positive youth development\, adolescent-friendly services\, and how to apply the quality components of care through the stages of adolescence. \nRegistration is $75 and included up to seven hours total of continuing education credits. \nRegistration and further information is available online.

DESCRIPTION:Families can be introduced to sign language\, deaf culture and even learn about careers in the deaf community at McAllen ISD’s DeafWorld 2024 on Sept. 27. \nThis free event\, which has a Super Hero theme\, takes place at McAllen ISD’s Brown Middle School gym and is organized by McAllen ISD’s Regional Day School for the Deaf Program. \n“We encourage everyone to come have some fun as they learn about deaf culture\, sign language\, deaf education\, careers\, resources and more\,” says RDSPD Director Liza Lara. \nMcAllen ISD serves more than 300 deaf and hard of hearing students in all grade levels in the Upper Rio Grande Valley from Mercedes to Roma. Escandon Elementary is home to elementary age deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Middle school age students go to Brown Middle School and high school age students go to McAllen Memorial High School. \nThe department also provides parent infant services. In addition\, Roosevelt Elementary houses the RDSPD’s new oral program and qualifying RDSPD students may attend McAllen ISD’s STRIDES 18+ program.
