SUMMARY:2022 Causeway Run & Fitness Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce hosts its 38th Annual Longest Causeway Run & Fitness Walk on April 9. The 5K Walk and 10K Run features thousands of participants starting in Port Isabel and crossing the causeway. \nWalkers will end at the Padre Balli statue on the Island while runners will continue to the finish line at Louie’s Backyard. The run will start promptly at 7 a.m. at the Port Isabel Community Center at 213 Yturria Street in Port Isabel. Walkers will start approximately 15 minutes later. Only the outside lane of the westbound side of the causeway will close for the run and it will reopen as soon as the last walker clears the bridge. \nWith more than 2\,400 participants in 2020\, run organizers say they are expecting a great turnout this year. \n“Everyone participating in the event will receive a custom medal commemorating the run and walk\,” said Chamber President Betty Wells. “Our medals have a stained glass look and have been very popular.” \nThe first 1\,500 registrants to check in also receive an event t-shirt\, although sizes are not guaranteed. \nEntry fees for the Run & Walk start at $25 for students and military personnel with ID\, $35 for walkers\, and $40 for runners. Late registration is Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Port Isabel Community Center and from 5:30-6:30 a.m. at the Community Center on Saturday. \nOnline registrations are open\, or participants may download a registration form.

DESCRIPTION:Walk For Women hosts a Silent Dance Party at Louie’s Backyard Oct. 10 with three channels of music to choose from. \nThe silent disco is an event where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Rather than using a speaker system\, music is broadcast via a radio transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participants. Find someone with the same color headphones as yours and dance with them. \nIn addition to the Dance Party\, Walk For Women hosts a “Bucket Auction” with $5 tickets. Participants can put their ticket in any of 25-30 buckets for the item(s) displayed next to that bucket. Participants can also buy the “Arms Width” string of tickets. For $50\, they ca hold their arms out to the side as wide as they can and get a string of tickets as long as their arms. \nThe Dance Party will also include a live auction of four to five items\, including an artist’s original t-shirt artwork. \nAdmission is $20 per person and includes free hors d’oeuvres. Headphone rental for the Silent Dance is $10.

DESCRIPTION:Tune up your wing-shooting skills before Whitewing-Dove Season at the North Brownsville Rotary Club’s ninth annual Whitewing Tune Up Shoot on Aug. 21. Proceeds go towards funding scholarships for area college-bound students. More than $250\,000 has been awarded since 1985. \nTrophies awarded for first-\, second- and third-place teams\, and first-\, second- and third-place individuals in men’s\, women’s and youth divisions\, plus Modified Lewis Class A\, B\, C and D winners. No experience is necessary as knowledgeable clay target shooters who will instruct participants. \nOrganizers will pair Individual participants with others to make up squads of five shooters. Practice rounds available on the Wednesday prior from 6 p.m. until closing at a special $6 per round. \nEntry fee includes participation in a multi-station sporting clay course\, BBQ meal and refreshments. Door prizes include ice chests\, a wine basket\, shotgun shells and beach gear.  Adult entry fee includes entry into the $1\,200 guaranteed payout Calcutta. Additional BBQ plates available for non-participants at $10 each. \nRegistration takes place from 8-10 a.m. Instructions to participants and commencement begins at 9 a.m. \nRaffle tickets are available from club members at $10 each for an adult Yildiz 12 Ga. Over/Under shotgun and two-liter ice chests.
