SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale & Talk With Mike Heep
DESCRIPTION:Mike Heep\nQuinta Mazatlan kicks off Native Plant Month in Texas on Oct. 6 with a native plant sale and Mike Heep’s presentation\, “Landscaping with Native Plants.” \nHeep will focus on a wide variety of the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants and information on how to diversify your garden with local specialties that help sustain the ecological and biodiversity of the region. \nSouth Texas native plants are the ecological basis upon which life depends on in the Rio Grande Valley. All terrestrial animals\, in one way or another\, depend on these plants for food\, shelter and nesting. With an educational background in botany\, agriculture and chemistry\, Heep turned his passion into a business and opened Heep’s LRGV Native Plant Nursery in Harlingen in 1978. Heep grows more than 150 native plants and enjoys sharing his knowledge on how to design bird- and butterfly-friendly native gardens with the community. \nHeep also works closely with Quinta Mazatlán\, restoring and preserving the native habitat in “the big backyard\,” which can serve as a demonstration site for your garden. \nPre-purchased tickets are online at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. Tickets are $3 per person.

SUMMARY:Make a Fun and Simple Backyard Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Allen Williams\nTransform a portion of your yard into a welcoming place for birds and butterflies this fall. Allen Williams\, landscape habitat specialist at PSJA ISD\, goes over the key components that you need to address to do so on Sept. 22 at Quinta Mazatlan. To help you grow your “edible” garden for wildlife\, the native nursery “Blue Mockingbird” will also be selling native plants to take home. \nWilliams became the first landscape habitat specialist for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD in 2013. His land stewardship career spans over 20 years. Williams is passionate about creating gardens that connect young minds to the wonders of nature. His specialty is butterfly gardens where students can gain first-hand knowledge from an “outdoor living classroom.” \nAny lawn\, large or small can be turned into a wildlife habitat\, because some habitat is better than none.  Adding native plants to a garden will assist in attracting a large variety of birds and butterflies.  Furthermore\, the local wildlife is more familiar with native plants and will put them to good use for food and shelter. At a minimum\, choose plants that are native to your state or country. \nCome early to walk the trails and visit the nature gift store with a new stock of hummingbird feeders\, bird shirts and more. \nTickets are available online at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com for $3.

SUMMARY:“Beginner’s Luck: My First Year of Birding” With Avrel Seale
DESCRIPTION:Avrel Seale\nLooking to begin birdwatching? Join Avrel Seale for “Beginner’s Luck: My First Year of Birding” at 6 p.m. March 17 at the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center. \nA Valley native living in Austin\, Seale is the author of 10 books and a writer for the University of Texas at Austin. The youngest son of Jan Seale and the late Carl Seale\, he is also the brother of Erren and Ansen\, all of whom have been heavily involved with Quinta Mazatlán over many years. Seale began filming and photographing birds during the catastrophic winter storm of February 2021 and never stopped. His presentation will include a video highlighting the best captures of his first year of birding. Nearly all of his subjects were filmed in Texas\, including at Quinta Mazatlán\, Estero Llano Grande State Park near Weslaco and South Padre Island. \nFor Seale\, the challenge of photography is greater due to a major stroke four years ago. Seale can use only his left hand\, and camera shutter releases are almost exclusively on the right. Despite this hurdle Seale persevered and picked up tips and tricks on how to capture stunning images of birds. He utilized a mix of tools to build his bird knowledge\, including traditional field guides and Facebook groups\, as well as apps such as Merlin\, eBird and iNaturalist. \nBeginning Birding\nCapturing images of nature does not require an advanced professional camera. Nature photography can begin with your own cell phone camera. In addition to digital photography\, Seale uses a cell phone and a spotting scope. This captures slow-motion video revealing extraordinary details of bird behavior too quick to notice in real time. \nThe benefits of birding include improving physical and mental health by staying active and reducing stress. Birders engage with community and other birders while providing a positive economic impact on the community. Birding can happen almost anywhere from a local park to a back yard. It also does not require any extras to begin. As long as you have an interest\, it’s never too late or too early to begin your birding journey. \n“They say youth is wasted on the young\, and I was woefully disinterested in birds for all those years I lived in the Valley\,” Seale mused. “I guess I had to move 350 miles away before I realized that my hometown is basically the center of the birding universe.” \nTickets are $5 per person. Pre-purchased tickets recommended. Tickets available for purchase at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.
