Mission Chamber Supplies Backpacks

More than 2,000 backpacks complete with school supplies have made their way to Mission Consolidated Independent School District thanks in part to the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. The backpacks made their way into the hands of students Aug. 2 at Veterans Memorial High School during a Back to School Bash.

More than 4,000 people, including students and families, were in attendance for the event. Offerings also included free haircuts, free eye screenings, visits to an immunization clinic and sports physicals for a small fee. A portion of the proceeds generated from the chamber’s 2018 Tom Landry Golf Classic funded the backpacks. H-E-B donated 500 of the backpacks.

“The 2,000 backpacks our students received through the help of the Tom Landry Golf Classic have a tremendous impact for the students and their families as they prepare for the start of school,” said Cris Valdez, Mission CISD interim superintendent. “This not only helps families make sure their children have what they need to start the school year, it also can help them stretch their back to school budgets.”
