DESCRIPTION:The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and the City of Edinburg host the 16th annual Texas Cook’Em: High Steaks on July 2 at Ebony Hills Golf Course. Headliner for the event is Los Palominos with openers Red Not Chili Peppers\, Draft\, Explosion Tejana and more. \nTexas Cook’Em is one of the state’s biggest BBQ purse\, awarding $25\,000 to winners. Competitors will battle it out on the grill to cook the best chicken\, ribs\, pork\, brisket and rib-eye steak. Winners will take home money and a year’s work of bragging rights. \nA portion of the event proceeds will benefit local veterans attending the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley with scholarships. Texas Cook’Em has distributed over $20\,000 in scholarships locally. \nThis year’s festivities will begin at 10 a.m. Activities include live music\, vendors\, car show\, a children’s fun zone and food. \nAdmission to the concert is free. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Chamber members may attend this session to hear from current board members about their experience serving the chamber. \nLearn More About How You Can Serve Your Local Business Community:\nA board of directors governs the business\, property and affairs of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce. The board is responsible for establishing policy\, budgets and the guidance of affairs. The board is composed of up to 20 persons who shall be members in good standing of the chamber. Directors are elected for a term of three years\, which are staggered so that approximately one-third of the directors are elected each year. Vacancies in the board shall be filled by a majority vote of the remaining directors. \nThe Brownsville Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for members willing to be considered to serve on the board of directors. Open vacancies include seven three-year term vacant board of director positions\, which will serve from Oct. 2022 to Sept. 2025. All eligible nominees will be considered by the nominating committee\, chaired by Richard Abete\, chairman of the board. \nTo be considered to be a director\, nominees must be members in good standing. Members who have served as a director in the past should have had one year pass after the expiration of their term before seeking re-election. \nInterested members should submit an up-to-date resume and a completed Board of Directors Nomination Form no later than 5 p.m. July 8. Public outreach is an important aspect of the zoo’s overall mission and is a primary responsibility for Jaime Zepeda. Zepeda will present several species of reptiles\, turtles\, snakes and even an alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). Attendees will learn what makes these animals so unique and important. \nZepeda graduated from University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a bachelor degree in biology. Join them for a special glimpse into the world of nocturnal insects on July 23 from 9 p.m. to midnight. \nA dimly lit trail will guide the guests through the Thorn Forest trails at Quinta Mazatlan to special Mothing Stations with knowledgeable naturalists. Guests should expect to see spiders\, scorpions\, frogs\, toads\, beetles and more. \nMcAllen’s Urban Ecologist John Brush shares\, “We are celebrating National Moth Week in the park. There are over 10\,000 species of moths in the United States and Canada\, with over 100\,000 worldwide.  Moths are the unseen pollinators of the night\, playing a huge role in helping plants reproduce and being important parts in food webs of many terrestrial ecosystems.” \nWear comfortable and protective outdoor clothing. Quinta Mazatlan recommends long pants and flat closed-toe walking shoes. They also ask guests to bring their own flashlights\, and prepare for biting insects by spraying before coming \nGuests are asked to remain on the walking trail and to be aware of their footing\, as forest areas will be dark. \nQuinta Mazatlan recommends patrons buy tickets in advance online.
