The City of Mission is at an elite level of American cities in becoming a finalist for the 2019 All-America City Award.

Mission is one of 20 finalists which include cities from all parts of the United States. In addition, it is one of only five Texas cities in the running for the 10 winners to be chosen in June. Neighboring Edinburg, along with Houston, San Antonio and El Paso round out the Texas cities. Among the initiatives and accomplishments that Mission cites in its All-America application is its work with advisory boards and improving its food pantry to serve more residents. The application also promotes the work of the Mission Economic Development Corporation.

“Being named an All-America finalist reminds us of the potential within our community to tackle tough issues and create real change,” said Dr. Armando O’Cana, the mayor of Mission.

“To be competing for this esteemed award affirms our community’s quality of life.”

The National Civic League presents the All-America City Award annually. The civic league seeks to reward cities that leverage civic engagement, collaboration and inclusiveness in their communities. To get to the finalist stage, a city must go through a lengthy application process. It must also cite specific results of initiatives it has taken in their community.

In June, city officials and community leaders will bring their application to life before national civic experts. During a live presentation, the experts will then assess the effectiveness and impact of the initiatives in Mission. O’Cana said gaining All-America City recognition would further boost his city’s growth.

“Being named an All-America City would help lure more employers, secure development grants and market the city of Mission nationally,” he said. “Our city has created many programs and initiatives tailored to the needs of our community. This (award) would be recognition of that (outreach).”
