STC Offers Wide Range of Kids Summer Camps

STC summer camps 2019South Texas College is gearing up for summer camps that will enable students to engage in fun and interactive activities led by field professionals. Week-long sessions will run throughout June and July for older elementary to high school students.

June camps

Campers at STC’s Technology Campus and Pecan Plaza can choose from a variety of camps. Each is designed to keep minds sharp and teach new skills while campers also having fun.

At the aviation camp, students will utilize models and simulators to learn about the theory of flight, airplanes, control surfaces and engines.

Through the CyberPatriot program, students learn about cybersecurity concepts. This includes working with Windows 10, Linux, Ubuntu 16, virtual machines, basic graphical user interface security and basic command line security.

The primary goal of the Intro to Game Development program is to bring the fun and exciting world of creating and developing games to students. The activities benefit seventh- through 10th-grade students pursuing careers in Mathematics, Science and Engineering.

Mobile App Development is two parts. These include an introductory course and an advanced course of working with the Android mobile developer platform. These programs help students understand the creation of mobile apps.

The aviation camp, CyberPatriot, game development, and mobile app development camps will take place at STC’s Pecan Campus in McAllen.

The Sewing camp, which will take place at Pecan Plaza (2621 W. Pecan Blvd., McAllen) introduces the basics of sewing. This includes sewing machine parts and setup.

Sessions begin June 3 and will take place every week throughout the summer. Camps are open to grades 5-12. More information and registration is available online.

July camps

STC’s popular Robotics and Automation Summer Camp takes place July 1-19.

New for this year, the college’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing offers drone pilot training for ages 13-17. The camps, in cooperation with FIRST-RGV, are July 1-5, July 8-12, and July 15-19.  This camp utilizes the current techniques and principles to pilot a recreational or industrial drone in a safe manner. It follows FAA regulations and air space limitations.

This year’s First Tech Challenge also begins in July. This camp utilizes the Robotics Build and Programming Principles of First Tech Challenge to prepare students to compete in city and state meets. Drone Piloting Fundamentals training takes place in addition to the FTC.

Robotics camp are available to ages 12-7 in three week-long camps July 1-5, July 8-12, and July 15-19.
