Matt Wolthoff is the new president of Driscoll Health System’s new hospital in Edinburg, Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley. The health system expects the hospital to open in Spring 2023.

As president, Wolthoff is directly responsible for the overall operations and performance of the new hospital, including implementation. He will report directly to Eric Hamon, president and CEO of Driscoll Health System.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley will operate independently as an eight-level hospital at 2820 W. Michaelangelo Drive. A formal groundbreaking takes place Nov. 16.

Valley Experience

A longtime resident of the Rio Grande Valley, Wolthoff has served in several healthcare senior leadership roles in South Texas. This includes Rio Grande Regional Hospital and Valley Baptist Medical Center. He most recently served as president and CEO of Harlingen Medical Center.

“The president of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley is a vital role, and I feel confident that Matt is the right person for the position,” said Hamon. “He knows the details, big and small, that come with overseeing a hospital, specifically a hospital in the Rio Grande Valley. His reputation in healthcare is stellar and we at Driscoll are fortunate to have such an outstanding leader at the helm of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley.”

Driscoll is a leader in pediatric healthcare, and serving the needs of South Texas children is so much more than a job for its team members – it is a calling. I am privileged to be joining them in answering the call to help get kids back to being kids,” said Wolthoff.

Wolthoff is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is the 2014 Young Healthcare Executive of the Year for the South Texas Chapter of ACHE. Wolthoff earned a Master of Business Administration with a Healthcare Concentration from the University of Texas-San Antonio. He is also a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Management.

Wolthoff currently serves as the chairman of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce board, and also is on boards for the Rio Grande Valley Partnership and United Way. He previously served on boards for the McAllen Economic Development Corporation and McAllen Chamber of Commerce.

Wolthoff and his wife, Lucy Ann, have three children. He is an Air Force veteran and a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy.

The Future

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley will operate with more than 500 employees while creating significant economic impact and new job opportunities for clinical, ancillary and support staff in the Rio Grande Valley. Pediatric services will include specialists, acute inpatient and outpatient surgery, emergency services, rehabilitation and more.

Driscoll currently offers more than 30 medical and surgical specialties offering care throughout South Texas, including the Rio Grande Valley. Driscoll also sees patients in its clinics in Brownsville/Harlingen and McAllen.
