University Center, located on the Texas State Technical College Harlingen campus, recently received its third industry award, a regional Award of Merit in the Green Project category for 2011 from the Engineering News-Record magazine.
SpawGlass Contractors submitted the nomination to ENR for its energy conservation features, which includes a 442 solar panel roof which provides up to 106 kilowatts of electricity, a sun-shaded curtain wall, and reclaimed wood taken from military barracks at the former Harlingen Air Field where the campus stands.
Other awards and recognitions earned by University Center are the Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. (ABC)-South Texas Chapter, a nomination for the nationwide Excellence in Construction Award from ABC, and a ranking of second among more than 200 entries as it received an Award of Merit in the institutional category from ABC. The building is also a candidate for review to receive Gold Certification for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The ENR published the results of its Texas and Louisiana Best Projects in the Dec. 12 edition. The story is currently available online.
