As temperatures and heat indexes continue to soar, the City of McAllen would like to remind the public that many city facilities are open and available to the community as cooling centers.
McAllen Community Centers are open for patrons to come in and cool off. Seats are available in the lobby as well as access wi-fi and areas to recharge phones.
In north McAllen, the Lark Community Center at 2601 Lark Ave. is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Weekend hours are Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information is available by calling 956-681-3340.
In central McAllen, the public may visit Las Palmas Community Center at 1921 N. 25th Street. The Las Palmas Community Center hours are Monday thru Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 956-681-3350 for more information.
In south McAllen, the Palm View Community Center at 3401 Jordan Road is open Monday thru Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 956-681-3360 for more information.
The community may also cool off, plug in their devices and use the free wi-fi at any McAllen Public Library. Locations include the Main Library at 4001 N. 23rd Street, Lark Branch Library at 2601 Lark Ave. and Palm View Branch Library at 3401 N. Jordan Ave. The public doesn’t need a library card to visit the library, just to take materials home. Call for the most up-to-date information on branch operations.
