A 30-foot high ramp juts out from the Ecotourism Center and offers an expansive view of the Bahia Grande.

A 30-foot ramp angles upward toward a setting sun and a sweeping view of the Bahia Grande plains of coastal South Texas. It’s the high point of the South Texas Ecotourism Center in Laguna Vista. Gayman Channel Restricts Public Access

Based on study and recommendations from ecologists, the current 34-foot-wide half-mile Gayman channel will be widened to 250 feet and deepened to nine feet. This will increase tidal exchange by a factor of 13x and restore the ecosystem as a major fish, wildlife and waterfowl nursery and habitat.

Access to the Carl “Joe” Gayman Channel is closed to the public as of Aug. 28 as work continues to increase tidal exchange and restore the Bahia Grande as a major fish, wildlife and waterfowl nursery. Bahia Grande Tidal Channel Closes Until Fall

Based on study and recommendations from ecologists, the current 34-foot-wide half-mile Gayman channel will be widened to 250 feet and deepened to nine feet. This will increase tidal exchange by a factor of 13x and restore the ecosystem as a major fish, wildlife and waterfowl nursery and habitat.

The Carl “Joe” Gayman Channel connecting the Bahia Grande tidal basin and the Brownsville Ship Channel is closed to the public as of May 1. The pilot channel will reopen in November after undergoing major enhancements. The current 34-foot-wide half-mile Gayman channel will be widened to 250 feet.
