Local Medical Partnership Receives Training Funding

Commissioner Juilan Alvarez presents a Skills development fund check to representatives from Valley Regional Medical Center and Texas State Technical College.

Valley Regional Medical Center and Texas State Technical College are teaming up to provide job training using a $202,162 grant. The grant provides custom training to 153 new and incumbent workers for training in industry-related topics. This includes vocational nursing, physical therapy and accounting. Trainees will include administrative assistants, cardiac lab technicians, diagnostic imaging technician, nursing assistant and social workers. Texas State Technical College, in partnership with Valley Metro, recently began a Professional Bus Driver Training course to help fill a regional need. As an offering via Workforce Training and Continuing Education, students receive preparatory training for both written and driving exams for bus driving. The Workforce Development and Continuing Education department at Texas State Technical College, in partnership with Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, is the recipient of a Skills Development Fund grant for customized job training. The $301,238 Texas Workforce Commission grant currently provides technical skills training for 155 Valley Baptist Medical Center employees.
