South Texas College and Universidad Tamaulipeca have signed a general collaboration agreement to create tools for training through the use of a unique bi-national partnership at least three years in the making. VITA Assists With Free Tax Returns

The VITA program will be at STC until March 8 to assist with tax returns.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is currently offering free income tax service at South Texas College. VITA works in cooperation with United Way of South Texas and the Internal Revenue Service. Leaders for Hidalgo County EMS/South Texas Air Med met on Jan. 31 to work to finalize a plan to provide helicopter air ambulance service to area hospitals. Walmart Increases Driver Pay

Beginning in February, drivers for Walmart will receive a per mile increase of $0.01 and a 50-cent increase in activity pay for arrive and arrive/drop occurrences. Each year, Walmart’s 8,000 drivers travel over 700 million miles and deliver millions of cases of merchandise to 4,700 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the nation. Grants Awarded to Local ISDs for Job Training

Donna ISD, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD, Raymondville ISD are all recent recipients of Jobs and Education for Texas grants fro the Texas Workforce Commission. The schools will use the grants to purchase and install equipment necessary to train 779 students for careers in high-demand occupations. These include welding fabrication and emergency medical services. Grant totals include $271,472 to Raymondville ISD, $208,383 to Donna ISD and $280,630 to Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD.
