Bahia Grande Tidal Channel Closes Until Fall

Based on study and recommendations from ecologists, the current 34-foot-wide half-mile Gayman channel will be widened to 250 feet and deepened to nine feet. This will increase tidal exchange by a factor of 13x and restore the ecosystem as a major fish, wildlife and waterfowl nursery and habitat.

The Carl “Joe” Gayman Channel connecting the Bahia Grande tidal basin and the Brownsville Ship Channel is closed to the public as of May 1. McAllen’s Downtown Parking Services Division has resumed full parking enforcement as of May 1. Enforcement was suspended last spring in efforts to support local businesses, and help keep employees and community safe. People visiting downtown McAllen should now comply with all parking regulations. Parking enforcement includes city parking meters and off-street parking lots where decal permits are required to park.
