IMAS Awarded Opens Call for Art Proposals

The International Museum of Art & Science has received a Cultural District Project grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts for Destination McAllen: Art, Culture, IMAS. The IMAS is partnering with the McAllen Chamber of Commerce and Decibel Communications to promote the McAllen Cultural District across the state of Texas.

IMAS is currently requesting proposals for a public art project through Nov. 7. Artists may submit proposals for a public art installation to be on display on museum grounds.

IMAS President and Executive Director Ann Fortescue stated, “There is so much talent in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley which we have seen time and time again through our exhibitions and member art show. We are delighted to be recipients of this TCA grant and look forward to seeing its impact in promoting McAllen’s Cultural District.”

IMAS encourages artists to propose works of art that celebrate the local culture and can include sculpture or free-standing murals. Subject matter should tie into arts and culture and may reference the McAllen Cultural District or IMAS. Subject may include regional landmarks, cultural entities, local culture, binational region and international art.

“We are very proud of the rich arts and culture we have here in McAllen,” stated Elizabeth Suarez, President & CEO of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. “This project gives us an opportunity to highlight the McAllen Art District and to promote local artists across Texas and Internationally.”

McAllen’s Cultural Arts District includes a vibrant arts district in the heart of the city, along Main Street, the McAllen Convention Center, McAllen Performing Arts Center, Quinta Mazatlan, the McAllen Public Library, the McAllen Creative Incubator, and the International Museum of Art & Science.
