The Brownsville Beautification Committee has announced the official winners of the Murals Without Border Contest. The Murals Without Borders community-wide mural contest opened Aug. 1 to provide artists the opportunity to depict a world without borders. Submissions symbolize the unity of the Brownsville-Matamoros region and provide accessible art on public display for the community.

Winners are:

  • Un Mismo Corazon by Marisa Latigo. Latigo is a freelance photographer and designer from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, who specializes in the Japanese style of Manga.
  • A Hop, Skip, and a Jump by Marcelina Gonzales. Gonzales received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Brownsville in 2013. Gonzales’ work has been on exhibit extensively throughout the United States and internationally in Canada, Hungary, Germany and Dubai.
  • Liberty Lighting the World by Robert Ruiz. Ruiz is a Brownsville native who received a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Roberto Ruiz is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
  • Aguilas by Santos Villarreal. Villarreal is a native of Matamoros who has taught graphic design at the Universidad de Ingenierias y Ciencias Del Noreste in Matamoros.

A selection committee of 11 local leaders reviewed submissions to determine which artworks best capture the bi-national, bi-cultural celebration of Brownsville and Matamoros. The contest was held in collaboration with the City of Brownsville, the City of Matamoros, the Mexican Consulate in Brownsville and the Consulate General of the United States of America in Matamoros.

Each artist will each receive a cash prize of $1,500 plus supplies from the Brownsville Beautification Committee. The winning artists will work with the City of Brownsville to determine the final placement of the murals and schedule for completion.
