Clearing Hurdles For A Brighter Future

Rosalinda CastilloRosalinda Castillo had her sights on her goal of becoming a registered nurse but she also saw the hurdles she would have to face to get there.

“There are many people with bright minds out there who do not have the financial means to study a career they wish to fulfill,” Castillo said.

She understood full-time students best meet the demands of the nursing program at South Texas College, but she also knew the cost of tuition, books, equipment, transportation and all of the other expenses.

Then a family friend told Castillo about the Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement. The nonprofit organization has, for more than 25 years, provided wraparound services to people in the Rio Grande Valley. This unique service strategy is designed to take VIDA participants out of poverty and into high-demand, high-paying jobs. Castillo applied to the program.

An All-Around Boost

“I chose to enroll because I needed financial help to reach my goals of becoming a nurse,” Castillo said. That, she said, had been her primary hurdle. For the past two semesters, VIDA has played a significant role in helping Castillo overcome this hurdle and press on toward the finish line.

But VIDA has helped her in other ways, as well.

“The group sessions have become a sort of support group to remind myself I am not alone,” Castillo said.

During the group sessions, VIDA case managers, who also serve as career counselors, address issues such as budgeting, time management and stress. They also incorporate soft skills in the sessions, covering such topics as study skills, resume preparation and interviewing.

Castillo expects to graduate from STC’s Vocational Nursing Program next year. When she passes the state licensing exam, she will be a licensed vocational nurse. Castillo will continue her education until she becomes a registered nurse.

“VIDA has given me an opportunity to change my life and become a part of the community by helping others,” Castillo said. “It is important because it gives people a chance by supporting them. VIDA has changed my life, and I am forever grateful.”
