The International Museum of Art & Science kicks off its seasonal programming with Día de los Muertos Festival presented by H-E-B Helping Here and Market at the museum on Oct. 9 from 1-5 p.m.

Visitors can join a guided tour of the Mexican & Latin American Folk Art exhibition and view community altares. Art activities include candle painting, monarch masks and paper flowers. Traditional sugar skull decorating is also available during the event for $3 per participant (limited supply).

A diverse vendor market will be on site with traditional and handmade goods including art, jewelry, plants, aguas frescas and sweet treats. Attendees can also engage with community partners, including the Mission Historical Museum and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. A special performance by UTRGV Ballet Folklórico takes place at 4 p.m.

This year’s community altar display is honoring Inspiring Latinas. Community members and organizations were invited to create an altar for a woman who empowered their Latinx communities. Altars will be on view in the museum’s Discovery Pavilion from Oct. 9 through Nov. 5.

The Día de los Muertos Festival & Market is included in the cost of admission. General admission is $5. Admission for children ages 4-12, students with ID, and Senior Citizens 65+ is $3. Admission is $1 per person for WIC and EBT cardholders (up to four people per card). Public school K-12 educators, ages children 3 and under, and IMAS Members receive free admission.
