Local Contest Encourages Youth Nature Photographers

Southern Exposures Youth Nature Photo ContestQuinta Mazatlán and the Valley Land Fund are hosting the Southern Exposures Youth Nature Photo Contest through Aug. 1. The annual contest encourages children ages 5 to 18 to take notice and act to protect the beauty of nature in the Rio Grande Valley.

Between now and Aug. 1, children from 5 to 18 can submit up to six nature photographs taken only in the Rio Grande Valley. Photos can be of native plants, animals and landscapes in South Texas. Contestants are to enter their images online at valleylandfund.com by Aug. 1.

The contest is free to enter. Every child that enters will receive one winning image in the traveling exhibit, a tote bag, t-shirt and a fun evening at the awards ceremony at Quinta Mazatlán on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. Cash prizes also go to 10 Honorable Mentions. Quinta Mazatlán is offering the contest for free thanks to H-E-B, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, AEP Texas and the City of McAllen.

Quinta Mazatlán also offers Saturday photography workshops throughout July with professional wildlife photographer Ruth Hoyt. Registration is $5 per student and can be made in advance at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.
