Hundreds gathered on the morning of July 23 to commemorate Miracle Field’s groundbreaking ceremonies. It was a gathering of officials from the City of McAllen and Parks and Recreation with those from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions and the Capable Kids Foundation of the Rio Grande Valley. Community partners were also in attendance, welcoming the next phase of the McAllen Youth Baseball Complex.
“We’ll be back here to Miracle Field in a few months to celebrate the finished facility which will allow children with disabilities to play America’s favorite pastime, baseball,” Mayor Jim Darling announced shortly after the event began.
From slip-proof mats and additional safety features to accessible dugouts and bleachers, Rio Grande Valley children with disabilities will have access to play baseball like other children. Miracle Field is on the north side of the property at North 29th and Auburn in McAllen.
All speakers expressed sincere appreciation for H-E-B’s generous $150,000 gift, making Miracle Field possible. The H-E-B Tournament of Champions Grant supports the full installation of a Miracle Field and its latex-free rubber floor with inlaid lines.
H-E-B Senior Manager of Public Affairs Linda Tovar was present for the check presentation to the Parks and Recreation. Local children from Capable Kids Foundation, a division of United Way South Texas, also pitched in on tossing of the dirt for the official groundbreaking of Miracle Field.
