The largest environmental educational event in South Texas, ECO-RIO, takes place this weekend at Fiesta De Palmas. From Sept. 21-22, students 12 and under can build STEAM skills for free. The Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math event also builds environmental leadership.
Since nature education takes many forms, ECO-RIO features more than 40 educational booths. Students will have opportunities to see live animal ambassadors up-close. Many educational entertainers will be on hand including Sky King Falconry, Contacto Animal, Phil’s Petting Zoo, Coastal Studies Laboratory, Sea Turtle Inc., and Live Reptiles with Danny Conner.
A scavenger hunt and mini-presentations are also held throughout the festival. Children may visit the various booths, gain stickers and then show their ECO-RIO Passports for free prizes. The event also includes the largest DINO traveling exhibit in the country. More than 150 museum pieces from the earliest life on earth will be in the ballroom at the McAllen Convention Center.
ECO-RIO is open both days from noon – 7 p.m. with free family time on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families may also catch the Southern Lights Laser Spectacular at 9 p.m. nightly. The event features music, food and entertainment at Fiesta De Palmas.
Fiesta De Palmas is free for youth 12 and under. Admission for all other guests are $5.
