Free financial education, which includes both small business and personal finance, starts Oct. 19 in Edinburg with PeopleFund’s “Financial Education Friday.” The series of free classes take also takes place Oct. 26 and Nov. 16.
Held under BBVA Compass Center’s Pilot Program, the series is held at PeopleFund offices in Edinburg, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. The Edinburg office is located at 300 S. Closner Blvd. Ste. 1.
Session topics and dates are:
Small Business: Developing a Business Plan – Oct. 19 and Oct. 26, 9-10 a.m.
Business owners will learn the seven parts of a good business plan and what to consider when writing a business plan. At the end of the workshop, business owners will have a blueprint or first draft of a business plan.
Small Business: Business Financial Statements – Oct. 19 and Oct. 26, 10-11 a.m.
Business owners will learn the three most important financial documents: balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow reports. At the end of the workshop, business owners will be able to prepare or work with a professional to prepare these documents for their businesses.
Small Business: How Businesses Obtain Credit – Oct. 19 and Oct. 26, 11 a.m. – noon
Business owners will learn the value of creditworthiness as well as how to maintain a good business credit score. They’ll also discover the documents necessary to make a successful application for a business loan.
Personal Finance: Budgeting – Nov. 16, 9-10 a.m.
Participants will understand the value of creating a budget, and learn strategies to build a simple budget and pay off debt. They will also learn some core habits to practice and maintain financial health.
Personal Finance: Credit Scores & Reports – Nov. 16, 10-11 a.m.
Participants will learn what a credit score is, its importance and how to read a credit report. They’ll also learn the tools to maintain a healthy credit score and repair bad credit.
Personal Finance: Identity Theft & Fraud – Nov. 16, 11 a.m. – noon
Participants will learn about the methods used by identity thieves to steal personal information and how to protect themselves. They will also understand what information is at risk and red flags to watch out of for with regard to common scams.
