The City of McAllen Fire Department is looking for a few good public servants with interests in becoming McAllen firefighters.

“The McAllen Fire Department is a workforce of men and women dedicated to keep the residents of our community safe,” said Interim McAllen Fire Chief Juan Gloria.  “A firefighter is a first responder and rescuer extensively trained in firefighting, primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten life, property, and the environment as well as to rescue people and in some cases, even animals from dangerous situations. If you think you have what it takes to join the McAllen Fire Department, we encourage you to take the first step and apply to take the examination.”

McAllen Fire Department cadet pay is $32,148.27. Upon completion of one year of service, annual salary is $45,904.76.

Those who meet the requirements may be considered for employment with the McAllen Fire Department upon successful completion of the following:

  • Civil Service fire entry-level examination.
  • Pre-employment physical fitness assessment.
  • Applicant interview(s).
  • Background investigation.
  • All medical/psychological certifications as required

The city will administer the civil service fire entry-level examination on March 10 at 9 a.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. Individuals who would like to take the test must complete the application and submit all required documents. In order to be put on the Entrance Eligibility List, an applicant must pass the examination.

Applications are available online and at at the City of McAllen Civil Service Department on McAllen City Hall’s first floor at 1300 W. Houston Ave.

Applicants must complete and submit applications and requirements no later than March 1 by 5 p.m.  Applications may also be brought to Rosie Pedraza, McAllen Civil Service director, or mailed to P.O. Box 220, McAllen, TX 48505-0220.
