McAllen International AirportMcAllen International Airport set an all-time total traveler record for July in 2024 with 114,694 total passengers, an 8.7 percent increase over the previous record set in June 2024. Overall traffic in 2024 has increased 23 percent year over year, with 70 percent more flights since same time in 2023.

“McAllen International Airport has set records in four of the past five years, however this year we have taken it above and beyond” said honorable City of McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “We’re so thankful that more travelers are flying nonstop from McAllen, especially taking advantage of the new nonstop routes.”

McAllen International Airport, VolarisThree new air carriers and four new nonstop routes from McAllen debuted in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeromexico, Cancun via Volaris and Tampa-St. Petersburg through Allegiant Air.

McAllen International Airport has seen a high demand for all nine nonstop flights, but especially flights to Mexico City with Aeromexico, Austin with Delta and to Dallas with American Airlines.

“Our region’s travelers love connecting with the people and places important to them,” said City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez. “McAllen International Airport goes above and beyond to make that a great experience.”

In April, MFE was granted $7.4 million in funding to improve and expand the McAllen International Airport after seeing growth in 2023. The funding comes at a time when MFE is experiencing growth in 2024, and more recently, month-to-month historic traffic increases.

As for the specifics of the improvements, Director of Aviation Jeremy Santoscoy shared that the airport is conducting studies to best understand how and where the airport should expand.

“We’re making sure to assess the needs and justification to develop responsibly,” Santoscoy said. “Our stakeholders want to make sure that any decisions with the expansion are thorough and are the best options for our travelers and airlines including those in the future.”
