The Port of Brownsville remains a stronghold for the Rio Grande Valley’s economy, providing record-setting tonnage and robust operating revenues for FY 2021. Bahia Grande Tidal Channel Closes Until Fall

Based on study and recommendations from ecologists, the current 34-foot-wide half-mile Gayman channel will be widened to 250 feet and deepened to nine feet. This will increase tidal exchange by a factor of 13x and restore the ecosystem as a major fish, wildlife and waterfowl nursery and habitat.

The Carl “Joe” Gayman Channel connecting the Bahia Grande tidal basin and the Brownsville Ship Channel is closed to the public as of May 1. Port of Brownsville Achieves Milestone

The Port of Brownsville is closer to deepening the Brownsville Ship Channel after receiving a key permit June 6 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The permit allows the advancement of BIH, the Brazos Island Harbor Channel Improvement Project, to its construction phase.
