The City of McAllen is developing an updated comprehensive plan and is asking for residents’ input on what they feel the community needs. A community meeting in which the public can speak takes place Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the McAllen Public Library Auditorium, 4001 North 23rd Street.

At the meeting, McAllen city leaders and staff, including those who speak Spanish, will be on hand to receive comments and help residents engage on the plan development. The comprehensive plan will help McAllen maintain its character, enhance the quality of life for residents and support economic development.

Residents can also visit the Envision McAllen website to take a survey on needs and share ideas on what residents would like to see in the future. The website is available in English and Spanish.

“It’s important we hear from our residents, so as we plan for McAllen’s bold, sustainable future growth, we include what they would like to see,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.

Guiding McAllen’s Growth

The comprehensive plan sets a vision for how McAllen should grow over the next 20 to 30 years. The plan will guide decisions related to transportation, infrastructure, land use, parks, economic development, community identity, development standards and incentives and implementation.

Four phases comprise the project. The initiation phase reviews the physical, demographic and economic context of McAllen to develop a snapshot of existing conditions and identify potential catalyst recommendations. The second phase is drafting the vision, guiding principles and goals by seeking community input through robust community engagement efforts. The third phase develops the plan through committee and stakeholder meetings and community surveys. The fourth phase finalizes the plan with the McAllen City Commission.

Residents are encouraged to visit the website for updates on the plan’s process and review documents being drafted. On the site, they may also get to know the team working on the plan and contact the City of McAllen Planning Department with questions or for more information.

For questions or more information about the community meeting, contact the McAllen Planning & Zoning Department at 956-681-1260 or at planning@mcallen.net.
