Living History Day Brings the Past into the Present

Living History DayTexas Southmost College will host its latest installment of its Living History Day on Feb. 1 at the TSC South Hall Lawn. The event is free and open to the public.

Since 2017, Living History Day has been an event of sights and sounds of the past, celebrating the impact of both global and local historical eras. Visitors are encouraged to wear their best historical time-period costumes, meaning that it’s not uncommon to see Roman centurions, Norse Vikings, and colonial soldiers wandering the grounds. Instructors and TSC clubs also take part in the event, setting up booths with history-themed games and information.

Additionally, as has become a tradition for the event, volunteers from the the Palo Alto National Battlefield Historical Park will be on hand at the event to conduct firings of their historically preserved cannon. It is a collaboration which provides a greater degree of local historical context to the event.

“The driving forces behind organizing this event have been to expose our community to a variety of periods throughout history, providing a diversity of ideas and education to the community in an interactive way, as well as educate about local area history as part of Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Dirk Yarker, TSC History instructor and co-organizer of the event. “The volunteers are here not only to operate the cannon but also to share their wealth of knowledge about the region and the many significant historical events that have occurred here.”

Living History Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Texas Southmost College South Hall Lawn is located at 80 Ft. Brown Street in Brownsville.
