VA will be hosting free food drive-thrus for veterans and their families Dec. 19 in Harlingen and Jan. 16 in McAllen. The drives are part of VA’s work to eliminate food insecurity among veterans and their families.
The Harlingen drive will take place from 9-11 a.m. (or while supplies last) at Harlingen VA Health Care Center, 2601 Veterans Drive. The McAllen VA Clinic at 901 East Hackberry Avenue will host the Jan. 16 drive from 8:30–11 a.m. (or while supplies last).
Veterans who wish to participate must be enrolled in health care at the VA Texas Valley Costal Bend Health Care System and present a valid VA identification card to confirm their veteran status.
Veterans are asked to remain in their vehicles while VA staff verify eligibility. After eligibility is established, volunteers will place the food items in the trunk or bed of the veteran’s vehicle.
Food insecurity affects nearly 34 million people in the U.S., with veterans being seven percent more likely to experience it than non-veterans. Veterans face unique challenges that make them more susceptible to food insecurity than the general population. VA knows understanding these factors is critical to developing collaborative strategies to support veterans effectively.
“Partnerships, like the one we have with the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, help us expand our reach, providing vital resources for veterans and their families living in the Valley Costal Bend area who are facing food insecurity,” said Martinez.
Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness are strongly encouraged to contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for immediate assistance.
