The UTRGV Foundation is allocating $1 million to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to help support campus life initiatives that were approved last year by a student referendum.

Last November, UTRGV students voted to approve an athletics fee increase to help fund the expansion of spirit programs. Funds will also go towards the establishment of a marching band, women’s swimming and diving, and football. The allocation by the UTRGV Foundation will provide additional financial support for all four initiatives.

UTRGV President Guy Bailey said one of UTRGV’s priorities is to enhance the campus life experience for students. This allocation, he added, will play a major role in UTRGV meeting that goal.

“As always, we are extremely grateful for the UTRGV Foundation’s longstanding support of UTRGV’s mission and priorities,” Bailey said. “From allocating funds for student scholarships to helping fund faculty research, the foundation remains committed to the success of all our students, faculty and staff. We can’t thank them enough for their support.”

The fee increase is subject to approval by the UT System Board of Regents later this year.
