For generations, manufacturing has played a critical role in Texas’s diverse economy. Texas is home to approximately 17,500 manufacturing firms, with 80 of those being in Hidalgo County, said Mike Willis, treasurer of the South Texas Manufacturers Association.
National Manufacturing Month is in October. Today, Oct. 4, the first Friday in October, is actually National Manufacturing Day.
“Celebrating Manufacturing Month gets more people involved in economic development, it increases awareness and promotes the county,” said WIllis.
Willis gave thanks to several entities for their support in promoting Manufacturing Month during a proclamation on behalf of STMA.
“I’d like to recognize Hidalgo County, the Pharr Economic Development Corporation, South Texas College and PSJA ISD,” Willis said. “All of these entities work together with us to get the youth involved in Manufacturing Month.”
Texas manufacturers employ 7.1 percent of the workforce, an estimated 910,000 manufacturing employees. This includes 7,500 in Hidalgo County.
