Local Superintendent Elected To State Committee

Brownsville ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. René Gutiérrez is now representing Region One on the Executive Committee for the 2021–2023 term. Region One is part of a state-wide system of 20 regional education service centers assisting school districts across the state.

“I am very honored and humbled to have been elected to the Executive Committee of Region One in South Texas,” said Gutiérrez. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in this region to continue to support education and the students of Region One.”

Gutiérrez replaces Hafedh Azaiez. Azaiez’s resignation comes after accepting the position of superintendent of Round Rock ISD in Region 13. Gutiérrez will serve a term ending May 13, 2023.

The centers are service organizations, not regulatory arms of the Texas Education Agency. Originally slated to work with school districts as a media center, the role of Region One has expanded. It now works alongside school districts to carry out three main objectives. It assists school districts in improving student performance in each region of the system. The region enables school districts to operate more efficiently and economically. It also implements initiatives assigned by the legislature or commissioner.

Region One serves 38 school districts and 10 charter school systems in an eight-county area. This includes Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb , Willacy and Zapata counties.
