San Juan Mom Receives a Lifeline with VIDA

Rosa DiazSan Juan resident Rosa I. Diaz describes life as a single mother with four children as both challenging and rewarding. Working full time as a provider, she earned above minimum wage; however, stretching her $11-per-hour earnings proved to be no small task.

“While I was grateful for my job, I knew I wanted more for myself and my family,” Diaz said.

She saw an advertisement for the Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement at South Texas College and also heard about the nonprofit organization from school staff. For nearly 30 years, VIDA has provided a path from poverty to prosperity for Rio Grande Valley residents through education.

A Turning Point

Diaz applied to VIDA and gained acceptance in February 2024. She enrolled in the Vocational Nursing Program at South Texas College.

“Balancing my studies with the responsibilities of being a single mother was no easy task,” Diaz said. “Financial hardship loomed large, making it difficult to manage both my education and family needs. However, VIDA became a lifeline during this challenging time. They provided crucial financial assistance that helped alleviate some of the burdens associated with my educational expenses.”

VIDA’s comprehensive services go far beyond financial assistance, offering individual and group counseling to all program participants to help them overcome the challenges that often prevent college students from graduating. Study skills, time management, budgeting and stress management are just a few of the topics covered during the counseling sessions. VIDA participants also participate in a wide range of community service activities to show their gratitude to the Valley communities that fund the organization.

Continuing the Journey

Diaz graduated in July 2024 and passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Vocational Nurses in September, giving her the title of licensed vocational nurse. She is now working as a home health nurse and has her sights on another educational achievement.

“Looking to the future, my goal is to gain more experience and eventually pursue the RN (registered nurse) Program,” Diaz said. She feels confident that when that time comes, VIDA will be there for her again. “With determination and the support of programs like VIDA, I am committed to creating a better future for my family and myself.”
