UTRGV veterans are the recent recipients of the inaugural Texas Cook’Em High Steaks in Edinburg Veteran Scholarships. During the planning of the 14th annual Texas Cook’Em: High Steaks, the Edinburg Chamber made the decision to award five $1,000 scholarships. When H-E-B heard of this endeavor, they quickly and generously chose to match that amount. The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and its ambassadors chose H-E-B on W. Freddy Gonzalez Drive for its Chamber Raid for the month of August. The benefactor of the raid was the United Way with contributions going to its school supply drive. The ambassadors bought in close to $200 in school supplies. Chamber Raids allow ambassadors, board members and volunteers from the Edinburg Chamber to “raid” a local business to make purchases.…

The eighth annual “Fill the Bus” is going on today, Aug. 8, at the Shary H-E-B until 6:30 p.m. The one-day event accepts donations of school supplies and backpacks, with those making donations of a value of $25 receiving a free Schlitterbahn ticket. Verturo Construction owner Joey Holand wanted to help veterans. In 2016, Holand and his wife donated a hunting trip that reunited two combat-wounded veterans.
