The International Museum of Art & Science presents its 11th annual Lunar New Year Festival on Jan. 29, complete with traditional Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese crafts, games and more.
The 1-5 p.m. festival includes special performances and activities for visitors to soak in the cultural celebration that welcomes the arrival of spring. Performances include K-pop dancing by Illusion Dance Team, and “K-Stars” featuring Echo Effect and Levanter Dance Team. The Lord’s Church McAllen Choir will also perform, as well as local violist Young Sin Choi. UTRGV Korean Language students will also perform a traditional samulnori (percussion), poetry reading and singing. Lastly, Torres Taekwondo Academy will showcase martial arts with a lively demonstration.
Patrons may also discover the art of calligraphy with calligraphers Pierre Lu, Chandler Kang and Mijin Oh-Villarreal. Traditional teas and candies will also be offered in the tasting room. Local eateries Snow Bite and Han’s Katsuya will be selling boba tea, spring rolls and gyuza. Paper fan painting will also be available for an additional $2 per participant (limited supply).
“For over a decade, we have expanded this popular event to include more cultural perspectives with the support of local Asian and Asian-American communities,” stated IMAS Director of Education Claudia Martinez Gray. “Visitors gain much insight on how Lunar New Year is celebrated through performance, food, art, games, and togetherness. I am eager to welcome the Year of the Rabbit with our supporting partners.”
Festival admission is $5 with discounted $3 for children ages 4-12, students with an ID and senior citizens 65+. Museums for All (WIC/EBT) discount is $1 for up to four people per card. Children 3 and under and IMAS Members receive free admission. Advanced tickets are recommended for express entry.
