McAllen Convention Center To Host Critical Incident Training

Critical Incident and “Stop the Bleed” TrainingThe McAllen Convention Center hosts a Critical Incident and “Stop the Bleed” Training on Oct. 14, geared towards festival and event organizers, and venue operators.

The event features Mark Herrera, director of Education for the International Association of Venue Managers. As part of his duties, Mark teaches Situational Awareness-Mindset training aimed at giving venues the tools to be safer and more secure.

“Given recent incidences at events around the world, this is an extremely important opportunity for festival and event organizers and venue operators to be better trained and prepared in the event of dangerous situations that could pose a threat to attendees,” said Mike Hernandez, assistant director of McAllen Convention Center Facilities. “As the leading festival and event organizer and venue operator in the Rio Grande Valley, I think this would be a great opportunity for our colleagues in the industry to attend.”

The training takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom, 700 Convention Center Boulevard.

The objective of the critical incident training is for teams to identify and mitigate risk of harm to oneself and others through de-escalation techniques and using appropriate strategies to reason with non-compliant guests. The day-long training also enhances situational awareness by providing training to challenge teams to quickly identify agitated guests and resolve potentially violent conditions while appearing calm, centered and self-assured while deploying the best in customer services and guest experience.

The courses in the training include:

  • Active Threat/Active Shooter: provides knowledge and skills to successfully handle an active threat at an event
  • Situational Awareness: enhances situational awareness by providing training to enhance mental preparation, response and mitigation to environmental threats
  • Trained Crowd Manager Course: gives the skills needed to identify hazards, report problems and help protect oneself and others during an emergency
  • Verbal De-Escalation: identify and mitigate risk of harm to oneself and others through de-escalation techniques and use appropriate strategies to reason with non-compliant guests

Tickets are $40 per person and lunch will be provided.

Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com or at the McAllen Performing Arts Box Office.
