Hundreds from the Valley learn how to thrive in today’s economy

Starting your own small business can be stressful. It involves long hours but can be rewarding and employs other people to succeed. Be kind and helpful, learn from mentors, be grateful, bring passion to your work and surround yourself with people who are more intelligent than yourself … these are just a few of the points shared by successful small business entrepreneurs at the Rio Grande Valley Partnership’s Governor’s Small Business Forum on Oct. 19.

Have a business plan (which will change), possess capital and keep your personal credit in check. These are the necessities lenders and other seasoned banking executives pointed out during an opening panel discussion at the forum. They explained that a banker/entrepreneur relationship is like a marriage; listening and being honest is a two-way street.

A record crowd of about 300 Valley business and community leaders, along with want-to-be small business owners, gathered to hear a great line-up of panel participants and keynote speakers, as well as moderators, all coordinated by the RGV Partnership under the direction of President and CEO Sergio Contreras.

Professionals from many industries shared their wisdom, experiences, struggles and advice to a full room at the Boggus Ford Events Center in Pharr. Representatives from the governor’s office to regional administrative leaders from both for-profit and non-profit organizations enlightened attendees on the real picture of small business ownership.

Invaluable guidance was given throughout the day to current entrepreneurs and also those who are considering to take the plunge.

My thirty years in the media world has primarily focused on marketing, advertising and writing. This industry is my passion. I have been blessed to serve customers with marketing consulting, advertising concepts, video production and promotion of all forms - broadcast, print and digital. My occupation is a fun job but not work. The opportunity to put clients and customers together awakens me early. Learning clients and their businesses enables me to create effective multimedia advertising campaigns. My media life led me to deep South Texas in 2004 to co-found The Business Times of the Rio Grande Valley and then the Valley Business Report in 2009. This south Louisiana native is proud to call the Rio Grande Valley my home.
